The UK government has placed 11 new countries to its travel alert roster concerning the risks of industrial alcohol contamination from tainted spirits.

This revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, following multiple notable cases including the fatal death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to blindness or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

What is Methanol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of spirits, commercial firms bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the refining procedure.

Yet in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to reduce expenses, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Government Guidance for Travelers

Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should be aware of the indicators of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"When you are drinking spirits overseas, choose well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," the official warned.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's much more severe than usual or blurred eyesight – get medical help fast."
