Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Thrilling Overtime Victory
The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player scored the game-winning baskets late in double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their championship campaign with a narrow win over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds left in double OT, securing the titleholders a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man top-scored with a game-high 39 and also hit a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.
But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, was instrumental together with the game's hero.
"Grit and defence," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, good luck or misfortune. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their home court, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.
The Thunder defeated the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the chance to get some early revenge on this Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.
In other action, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 for the road team.
The Lakers were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he recovers from sciatica.
