Student Society Future Leader Removed Due to Conservative Activist Comments
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against George Abaraonye reached the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after the student reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in the United States.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to welcome the incident.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion took place over the recent days, with results announced on this week.
Society announcements showed that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in following the Oxford Union's rules.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".
His statement categorically refuted that any person acting for George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.
His comment added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
External Responses
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The message accused the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the killing of a ideological rival".
The communication indicated that if the student were to remain in post, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the society in May.
