Trans director Sam Feder's latest film "Heightened Scrutiny" presents a powerful dual perspective – both an emotional portrait of a key trans advocate and a pointed examination of journalistic coverage about transgender issues.

Judicial Struggle at the Supreme Court

This feature follows ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he gears up for oral arguments in the important Supreme Court case the Skirmetti case. This legal battle occurred in late 2024, with the judiciary finally deciding in favor of the state's case, essentially permitting bans on treatment for trans young people to stay in effect across numerous US territories.

We created Heightened Scrutiny in merely 16 months, shared Feder during a conversation. By contrast, my previous film Disclosure took me five years, so this was very accelerated. Our goal was to stimulate dialogue so people would learn more about the case.

Human Narrative Amid Political Battle

While Feder presents a extensive critique of how mainstream publications have disseminated transphobic talking points, the film's most valuable contribution may be its compelling portrayal of Strangio. Typically a measured lawyer in media appearances, Strangio reveals his authenticity throughout the film.

That was a substantial challenge, to open up aspects of my life to a camera lens that I had made efforts to keep personal, explained Strangio. Sam told me he wanted younger people to know that we fought, to see what was done in support of these battles for our material survival.

Varied Voices in the Struggle

To strengthen Strangio's story, Feder features numerous trans voices, such as respected individuals from media and entertainment. This production also features viewpoints from non-trans allies who analyze how established organizations have participated to negative portrayals of trans individuals.

The perspective of transgender minors central to the legal case is shown through a extraordinary young student named Mila. Audiences first see her advocating for her peers at a school board meeting, with subsequent moments showing her speaking for trans rights outside the Supreme Court.

Personal Moments Beyond the Legal Battle

Heightened Scrutiny also features emotional moments where Feder transcends the ongoing legal battle, including scenes of Strangio traveling in Italy and receiving a tattoo featuring verses from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prediction."

This ink scene is among my preferred parts in the movie, stated Strangio. Being tattooed is nearly like a meditative experience for me, to be completely aware in my body and to view it as a vessel for things that are important to me.

Physical Autonomy and Portrayal

The filmmaker's focus to thoughtfully documenting Strangio getting to his tattoo collection highlights that this documentary is primarily about trans physical selves – not just those of youth who face prohibition of their right to live truly in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the various interviewees who participate in the production.

I create films with a message, and part of that is selecting people who are outstanding and articulate enough to carry the camera, shared Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should wear for an interview, my answer is anything that makes you feel hot. That is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we have difficulties so much with our appearance.

Impact and Hope

One factor that causes Feder's works excel is his clear skill for making his trans participants feel respected, seen and appreciated. This approach creates genuine connection between Feder and Strangio, enabling the director to achieve his goal of showing Strangio as a complete human being and providing a document for posterity of how resiliently he and others have fought for transgender liberties.

I don't want people to end up in a situation of incessant hopelessness because of what the law is denying us, explained Strangio. I aim to be in a practice of using the law to minimize harm, but not to transform it into some kind of conduit for our liberation potential. State bodies is not going to be the mirror through which we view ourselves. Trans people are that reflection, and it's extremely important that we persist having that discussion alongside discussions about fighting back these laws and approaches.
