Blue Jays On the Brink of Victory After Yesavage Tames Los Angeles in Fifth Match

Trey Yesavage delivered a performance for the ages and Davis Schneider launched a home run on the game's initial offering as the Blue Jays topped the Los Angeles Dodgers 6–1 on Wednesday, needing just one more triumph of their first championship since 1993.

A Rookie's Record-Setting Night

The young Yesavage, who debuted in the majors this past September, fanned a dozen batters without a single walk – achieving a historic World Series first. The rookie right-hander surrendered just one run on three hits over seven frames. His year commenced in the low minors with minimal fanfare, but has now started and won two of Toronto’s three victories in this championship series.

Early Offensive Explosion

Toronto’s hitters jumped out to a fast lead. On the game's opening offering, Schneider drilled a 97-mile-per-hour heater and sent it over the left-field fence. Just moments later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr homered as well to a similar location. It marked the first time in World Series history that the game began with two straight homers, leaving the audience in awe before most had taken their places.

Yesavage Takes Control

Yesavage then assumed command. He struck out five consecutive batters between the second and third innings, establishing a new rookie mark before Kiké Hernández finally broke the streak with a solo shot in the third inning to make it two to one. That was as close as Los Angeles would get.

Extending the Lead

In the fourth, Daulton Varsho smacked a triple to right field after a defensive mistake, and Ernie Clement hit a sac fly to bring him home for a three to one lead. The Los Angeles offense continued to sputter from there. After scoring six runs in Monday’s 18-inning marathon, they’ve managed only four across the past 29 innings.

Late Inning Insurance

The starting pitcher battled through six and two-thirds innings but was chased in the seventh after the Blue Jays loaded the bases. Both runners he left behind came around to score – thanks to a errant throw and one more on a base hit – to make it 5–1. A eighth-inning base hit provided the last run.

Bullpen Secures the Win

Yesavage was cheered off the field from the Toronto faithful, and the relievers finished the job. The late-inning pitchers each tossed a shutout frame to end the game, fanning three batters collectively while preserving the rookie’s masterpiece.

Offensive Woes Continue

The Dodgers, who shuffled their lineup in search of a spark, again found little traction. Their top hitter went 0-for-4 and is now without a hit in his last seven appearances since setting a World Series on-base record in Game 3.

Looking Ahead to Game 6

Now leading the series three games to two, Toronto return home with two games to secure the title. Game 6 is Friday night at Toronto's ballpark.
